Over the past decade, the healthcare profession has changed tremendously with the support of the evidence-based nursing practice. The evidence-based nursing practice is a multidisciplinary approach which involves the integration of a problem-solving that lead to the context of patient caring, patient’s data analysis, clinical experience, and expertise, and patients’ preferences and values. The clinical practice guidelines that set by the subcommittee to regulate the hospital operation are electrical cardioversion, electrocardiogram (ECK), abdominal paracentesis, intubation /bedside tracheostomy, ventilator management, and chest physical therapy (CPT). Among the healthcare practice guidelines, the endotracheal intubation/ mechanical ventilator is one of the procedures that had set by the hospital subcommittee of the University of Miami Hospital that require a multidisciplinary team approach like nurses, respiratory, radiology, and a medical doctor. The scope of this guideline includes short- and long-term management of patients who are intubated in the emergency room, adult medical, surgical, trauma, and intensive care unit (ICU). The endotracheal intubation/ mechanical ventilator’s clinical practice guideline contains statements and recommendations about using a variety of bedside behavioral assessment tools used to prevent any complication such as hospital acquires infections, pain detection. According to Smolowitz et al., “Registered nurses (RNs) are well positioned to assume direct care and leadership roles based on their understanding of patient, family, and system priorities” (2014, 2). The primary role of the nurses is to promote the patient well-being, restore patient’s health, and to provide a comprehensive professional nursing care through the use of the nursing process to all the patients. From this point of view, the health care practice guidelines that were developed by the subcommittee of the University of Miami Hospital for the nurse are based on the nurse primary role and their scope of practice and their responsibilities. The responsibilities that set by the subcommittee of UMH for nurses in the clinical practice guideline for the patients who are in endotracheal intubation/ mechanical ventilator are different than other healthcare professionals that will be followed the same guidelines.
