I will be proving this through the tragedies the Chinese, Jewish, and First Nations people have faced, despite their contributions to the building of Canada. “We become not a melting pot but a beautiful mosaic. Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams” (Jimmy Carter). This quote shows how diverse our country now is compared to the discrimination in Canada’s early years. In addition, this quote also shows how different everyone really is, but our differences are what bring us together. Many youths volunteered to prove their loyalty to Canada as well. Despite this, returning soldiers from the war still faced racial discrimination. Heated debates took place between various groups, they argued over the idea of, “Should Chinese men and women volunteer or wait until the government calls their names?” (http://www.ccmms.ca/chinese-canadian-history/ ). Those wanting to volunteer said if the Chinese want to be regarded as first class citizens they would need to show their commitment to Canada. Those against said, “Look at what the government has done to us. Why should we fight for a country that doesn’t want us?” (http://www.ccmms.ca/chinese-canadian-history/). This became a voted decision and the Patriotic Chinese won. Although the government of British Columbia and Saskatchewan did not want the Chinese to enlist- because they thought the Chinese would ask to be enfranchised,- over 600 Chinese later enlisted. Because of this, discriminatory laws such as the Chinese Exclusion Act were taken back, giving the Chinese immigrants the freedom they
