Tatiana’s Family Ethnography

Family history is a great part of one’s identity. It can greatly shape who you are as a person. Through this interview, I have put together my mother’s story of immigration to the United States. I have come to understand my mother better. As a result, I’ve learned more about where my family comes from and how it has affected my life.

I am the middle child of five children. My name is Tatiana Noelani Lopez. I was born on January 18th, 2000 in Mission Hills, California. My mother’s birth name is Laura Noemi Fabian Vargas who was born on May 5th, 1968 in San Francisco, Michoacan, Periban, Mexico. She helps a local Mexican woman run her ice cream truck. Without permission from Sonia or her father, she agreed to help this lady sell ice cream in exchange for cash payment. The lady would pick her up in her ice cream truck every day at a certain time and drive all over North Hollywood. My mother spent the whole summer helping her sell ice cream to help support her family. It was not until the summer of her 9th grade year in school that she got her first “official” job. My mother, being illegal, did not have a social security number. So, she made one up with random numbers and used it while she was still considered illegal. She used this to apply for her first job at the Employment Office, now known as the Unemployment Office. She recalls taking the North Hollywood bus to an office down near Lake Balboa, Los Angeles for her in-person interview. She went home and got a call the next day telling her she had gotten the job and that she would be working at one of their offices on Lankershim Blvd, not too far from where she lived.
