What characterizes a hero? Is it their morals? Is it courage? Or perhaps, is it their never ending persistence? In the critically acclaimed novel To Kill A Mockingbird, it is stated that Jem was “born a hero,” (39). But, does that make him the hero of the story? Personally, I think not. Instead it is clear to see that Atticus is the true hero of the story due to his effort and actions throughout the story, specifically the trial.
Now, you could also argue that Tom Robinson is truly the hero, due to the bravery it would’ve taken to go head-to-head with an all-white jury. But, this also makes it appear that courage is the defining aspect of a hero. While this certainly is a part of heroism, what about
