If all the citizens show no ownership over things or even people then everyone would have the same and fair chance to use different essential or luxurious items. In Brave New World, there was a saying in the society that stated “ every one belongs to every one else”(Huxley, 1932, p. 4). This meant that one person would not claim another person as his or her own. The terms boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, or wife was nonexistent because the thought of binding someone into a relationship was selfish. Regardless of how the society may view this, human nature would always bring people to feel envy because someone else was using something they wished they had all to themselves. This was made apparent when Bernard Marx from Brave New World was beginning to feel disgusted and envy when he overheard a discussion between two of his peers (Huxley, 1932, p. 12). Henry Foster told the Assistant Predestinator how great Lenina Crowne was and how the Assistant should have sexual interactions with her. This made Marx jealous and mad because he did not appreciate them talking about Crowne as “a piece of meat” (Huxley, 1932, p. 14). Additionally, he had romantic feelings for Crowne, so he did not want anyone to take her sexually but himself. Some would argue that as a result of controlling the people, that society was a utopian. In order for a community to lack conflict, all the citizens needed to have the same mindset. However, each and every person would not have the same views on certain subjects. In 1984, the leaders limited the chance of different ideologies by restricting the information of the past. Despite this, Winston Smith was beginning to view the world around him a little different from the leaders.
