As we discussed in class the devastation that hurricane Katrina did in New Orleans, and how the rescue effort was poorly executed. This demonstrates the type of discrimination of social class that the neighborhood in New Orleans encountered, as residents were made to fend for themselves, as the rescue effort was minimal at best. This illustrates that the neighborhood was primarily Black thus indicating that they are not worth the effort to rescue and/or waste taxpayers money to orchestrate an elaborate rescue effort in time. Thus, the issue that is being brought up is discrimination of a lower social class primarily consisting of African decent living in the neighborhood affected by this storm. This means that I took it upon myself to help the children from Marquette in their reading comprehension and their writing ability. Thus, this portrays a strong importance in the educational system, as these children have not had the ability to comprehend reading at their grade level or having the ability to write their name. The problem is the CPS school system is not devoting more resources in these underfunded schools to allow these children at an early age to obtain the ability or skills necessary to reach their potential and succeed later in life. For that reason, the issue that is occurring is the inability for the limited amount of teachers to successfully teach these children as there are more students at this CPS school to ensure every student is having the ability to learn and comprehend what they are reading. As a consequence, the students are getting a devalued education that is not sufficient for their success or their well being as these children are lacking the fundamental skills necessary to grow and prosper in the world we live in. Thus, this illuminates peace, justice and conflict resolution by having volunteers such as myself take a stand and help these children excel where the CPS system has failed them. For example, CPS schools in wealthier neighborhoods are kept open while poorer neighborhoods are having their schools closed and/or having money
