In the novel, Sydney Carton make great sacrifices for his cause. His cause is to make his love, Lucie, extremely happy no matter the costs. Even though Lucie is married to Charles Darnay, he is still determined and devoted to her happiness. Sydney still cared and protected her no matter the costs. This can be compared to how Martin did everything to protect his family. Both Sydney and Martin both gave their lives to their cause. Sydney ended switching out with Charles Darnay, so he would not have to be executed. He did not regret this decision saying, “it is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known”(Dickens 382). Sydney did this, because he did not want Lucie to be alone and sad forever without her husband. He also did not want Lucie’s children to grow up without a father. This can be compared to Martin Luther’s assassination. Martin gave his life so other could live in a world where they are happy and equal. These two people are similar in one major way.
