In the recent past, use of the internet in health care provision has proved to be an important way in ensuring health care services are provided in an efficient and timely manner. Electronic health records are a version of information regarding a patient that is recorded and stored in a computerized system. Through such records, patient information can be easily accessed and followed up thus ensuring continuous patient care. It also ensures online communication where patients can be contacted by physicians using emails and other online communications (Romano & Stafford 2011). Information stored in this manner is secure and confidential. To build these records, patients obtain health information regarding them from various health care providers and summarize it in their own records. In formation from the patients themselves is also stored in the personal health records (Gartee 2011). The personal health records contain details of any diagnoses made on the patient, medication and other treatment procedures given or scheduled to be given to the patient. The system also contains health promotion and prevention plans such as dietary plans for the patient as well as follow-up and home monitoring. The key purpose of personal health records is to make patients more responsible for their own health and empower them to make decisions that promote their own health.
