The social determinants of health are elements not related to medical factors that influence and determine health outcomes. This can include circumstances under which people are born, grow, live, work, and age, as well as a variety of economic, social, and environmental aspects. Vulnerable communities frequently have inadequate access to critical resources such as decent healthcare, nutritious food, secure housing, and education. Because these services are critical to sustaining health and avoiding disease, a lack of access can have negative consequences for health outcomes.

An example of an economic barrier can be financial difficulties, which might make it difficult to participate in health-promoting activities and get basic supplies.
