Explain Why A Student Should Be Allowed To Read In English Classes

Being told what to do is never fun, so why would being told what to read be fun? Throughout high school a student is given many tasks that need to be completed with no choice at all. That should change, they are now almost adults and need choices in their life to make them grow up. In English classes a student should be able to have a choice of what they are going to read in their class time.
Many students throughout their high school career are given books to read but never actually complete them. Websites like sparknotes.com and enotes.com are easy ways out of an assignment. These websites give quick bullet points on what a book was about and key factors to knowing the whole picture. Almost all of the use of these websites would go away if a student was given a choice of what they got to read. When given the option of doing something a student is more likely to complete the task because they were the one that chose it. The reason being is because it empowers them and makes them feel more independent. Some teachers have started testing out if this works within the classroom and have seen students excel so much. A class like Contemporary Literature, where you read books of your choice is super important in our schools today due to students being so busy and now hating reading. The books I read also taught me important lessons and could teach others too. An example from one of my books Where The Heart Is By: Billie Letts, is in the ending when the main character says what she has been taught “ A woman who taught friendship, a man in a stocking cap who taught her about love, a baby who taught to trust happiness, and a small old lady who taught the love of a home”(357).
