Just a few years ago, as a freshman, I was thinking about what courses I should enroll in for sophomore year. I decided that because I enjoyed science and had a potential interest in the medical field, I would take Honors Anatomy and Physiology. Little did I know, the class would become one of my favorites. Since I enjoyed A&P so much, I decided to take Honors Pathophysiology this year. These classes have created in me a passion for the health sciences. Through these courses I’ve gained a classroom exposure to the exciting field of medicine, however, now I’m ready to gain a real-world, more hands-on experience in the Health Sciences Practicum. Ever since taking Anatomy, I’ve had a major interest in the health sciences. I applied and was accepted into the Dell Medical School Health Sciences Summer Camp last year. For one week of last summer, I attended the camp and realized that the health science career path was my top choice of occupations. Through a health science career, I hope to able to be able to improve the lives of other people and ease their suffering through my knowledge and expertise. Additionally with the Dell Medical School, I have (during this semester) attended monthly meetings down at UT in the newly-constructed medical school. It has been such an amazing opportunity as I’ve learned more about occupations in the field through speakers, such as Lisa Hansard, a reproductive endocrinologist and infertility doctor. By listening to speakers, I’ve learned some about the medical field, however, through the Practicum, I’ll be able to actually see these jobs in action. Long-term goals for me include a degree in a natural science, graduation from medical school, and hopefully a great job as a doctor, whether in a hospital or an office.
