South Carolina was just a place back then but now we know it as home. Settling in Charles Town was difficult because of Geography, Resources, Diseases and hostility from Natives. South Carolina was where the English settled and met the Native Americans. The Native Americans lived in South Carolina a long time before the English came to settle here.
One reason it was hard to settle in Charles Town is because of Geography. Geography is the land and how it has formed. Resources are when things are in Charles Town already and you can use them. Wood from trees can be used for houses, weapons, and other useful materials. The bad thing about Charles Town was that there was not many resources in Charles Town besides wood from trees. In Charles Town water was a main resource because Charles Town was located on the coastal zone. Charles Town must have been scary to live in because of how any other tribe could come surprise attack the English. Also water could have flooded at any time, there were rivers everywhere in Charles Town. Also there was only good soil along the edges of rivers, this soil had clay, loam, and marl. Resources were very scarce at this time, so it was hard for the English to settle in Charles Town.
The last reason that it was hard to settle in Charles Town is because of diseases and hostility from Natives. The diseases killed people but mostly just slowed them down. The main disease was Smallpox. “Smallpox was like a cloud over the province.” (Doc E) Smallpox is a deadly, contagious disease that was everywhere in Charles Town and was one of the world's worst diseases.
