Dignity: Dignity is how people feel, think and behave in relation to the worth of value of themselves and others. To treat someone with dignity is to treat them as being of a worth in a way that is respectful of them as valued individuals. For example if you were in a nursing home working with the elderly and you dressing/undressing them, you would make sure that no one else would be able to see you changing them so you would close the door and make sure that they were in a private room. When you are dressing/undressing them you should make sure that you dress them gently and let them know what you are doing, you shouldn’t just start undressing them without them being aware as they could become frightened or confused.
Respect:
Respect is to hold another person in high regard, and to show them consideration. Mutual respect is the basis for a good doctor and patient relationship. It is giving them the right of wish when they need it. In a nursing home if the person didn’t want to be helped with being fed even if they needed it you would find another way to make it easier for them to feed themselves, giving them the respect that they asked for.
