Have you ever wondered how a righteous person and a selfish person work together to move the theme along? The story that is being spoke about here is Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. The first character in the story is Montag, who is very righteous and moves the story forward by using the theme of rebellion forward. The other character is Beatty, he is very selfish and, he goes against the theme of rebellion. Montag’s righteous nature drives the theme forward because he rebels against society. Beatty on the other hand rebels but he despises others who rebel.

He suspects Montag of the books hidden, as stated in page 101 “In Beatty’s sight, Montag felt the guilt of his hands. In the current scene, it shows that Beatty can sense Montag is guilty. This connects to the theme because it shows that Beatty finds out something about Montag that can harm him. Beatty also seems to kill and not care who he kills as indicated in page 109 “but piecework with a flame thrower…Your house, your cleanup.” In this scene he tells him that he will destroy his life. This connects to the theme because he kills those who rebel even if they are known or close to him. He is also very intelligent to live in a society without books, as Beatty himself states in page 113 “Why Don’t you belch Shakespeare at me”. This shows that he has knowledge of someone as well educated as Shakespeare. This is enough to prove that he connect to theme by showing that he rebels but opposes other who rebel like him and want to share the knowledge. Montag and Beatty share many differences that connect them to the theme of rebellion. One of the differences is that Montag wants to reveal the knowledge while Beatty doesn’t. This connects the characters to the theme because they live in a society where it is not acceptable to read books. Montag seems to have more of a merciful attitude toward people. Beatty is a heartless murderer in the story.
