In “Burning Bright”, Part 3 of Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451, the chapter opens with the firemen burning down Montag’s home and book collection subsequent to Mildred calling the alarm on him. Montag feels numb, nervous, and detached and proceeds to burn everything within his home, despite only having to burn his books. Afterward, Beatty arrests him, and realizes that Montag is talking to someone through an earpiece. Beatty takes the green bullet, and tells Montag that he will trace and locate Faber. In response, Montag takes the flamethrower, and burns Beatty’s body, killing him. Montag realizes the result of his actions, and consequently knocks out the other firemen and escapes. As Montag escapes the city, he encounters obstacles. Montag is still being hunted down by the Mechanical Hound, which is following him as he runs to the river. Running, he hears the Seashell radio broadcast with an announcement in which everyone within the city will look outside their windows to locate the fugitive. To do this simultaneously, the broadcaster counts up to ten, and Montag is nearly caught, jumping in the river once the count reaches ten. In the river, Montag escape the city and the Mechanical Hound, at last free. Montag finds the railroad tracks, and continues to walk until he finds a group of 5 homeless men around a campfire watching TV. One of these men identifies himself as Granger, and tells Montag how each of the men within the group represent and have memorized a particular book. While conversing, jet bombs circling the city in the distance, sending waves through the men. This causes Montag to recollect the time in which he first met Mildred, and he remembers the Book of Ecclesiastes. Together, Montag and the intellectuals travel back to the city, planning on rebuilding it from its
