Research Methods, CJ 3675, Section 01, Fall 2015
My research topic is family factors and juvenile delinquency. This paper focuses on three independent variables: neglect, exposure to violence in the home, and single parent households. The purpose of my study is to answer whether or not family factors contribute to Juvenile delinquency. According to J.P. Ryan, A.B. Williams and M.E. Courtney (2013), juvenile offending within itself, is a major public health burden that has to be dealt with. In this paper, the roles that family factors play, in contributing to juvenile delinquency, are being investigated. The question that is being posed in the research is, do family factors have an effect of juveniles becoming delinquent?

According to Kumpfer and Bayes (1995), neglect and child abuse are constantly increasing. When children grow up being witnesses of acts of violence, hopelessness and depression, they are more likely to grow up and become delinquents as oppose to children who grow up in a healthy family environments. If children are not shown care and love at a young age, they seem to drift off and expose themselves to violence in their neighborhoods. After being exposed to a negative environment, because a lack of parental presence and attention exists, the children have a tendency of choosing a negative path which eventually leads to juvenile delinquency (Agnew, R., & Brezina, T.
