Family centered care is everywhere in our hospitals. It takes a whole team of medical staff to accomplish the goal of caring for the patients and their families needs. The team of individuals that you may work with consist of multiple positions. These include a manager, leadership and/or other team members (followers). A nurse manager has many roles not only on the unit but in the hospital itself. Nurse managers are responsible for day-to-day decisions for their units and will be they will be the leaders of any changes. These changes will have a positive impact on patient outcomes and will benefit the patient’s quality and safety of care. According to
Peter Drucker’s management handbook he defined management as having five basic operations.

A nurse manager on a unit will make out staffing and vacation schedules, they can provide direct patient care in both emergent and non-emergent cases, direct the day-to-day activities of the unit, and provide necessary resources to get the necessary jobs done.
Nurses often have natural leadership skills. Nurses use these skills in many ways. Nurses are required to multitask, delegate tasks to others within their scope of practice and advocate for their patients. According to the Merriam-Webster’s website, to lead means to guide someone or something along the way. Three key qualities of a good leader is direction, trust and hope. As a nurse, families put their trust in us to do what we can to provide the best care and treatment for the family members. We hold hands of families in times of crisis and become a face and voice of hope when families feel they need someone to care for and guide them. Due to nurses need to care for many patients at one given time, it is imperative that each nurse handle leadership skills

Leadership is usually a lifetime endeavor.
Over time, new leadership skills can be learned and existing skills can always be improved.
Healthcare is always changing which means that leadership will need to change as well. A good leader will adapt to those changes and help the followers transition to the changes as well.
Without leadership, a nurse is simply a person struggling to do what is legally required for their position and often times will not be perceived as part of the care team. Leadership is one of the most important qualities of a successful nurse. Nurses are case managers, care givers, document specialists, leaders, role models, a voice of hope and a team member to a large group of other care providers that work hard to assure that each patient and their families are provided the best care possible while in their capable hands.
When given the opportunity to be a leader, I would like emulate the transformational leadership theory. “Transformational leadership encourages people to achieve more than just the basics expected of their job role” (Antill, 2015). Transformational leadership theory appeals to the higher need of an individual in the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, which is
