Female movie and television stars impacted how women dressed because they started new trends, which influenced women to wear new clothing. A common trend that started was that women began to wear more tight fitted clothes that defined their waistlines. They did this to give themselves a shape. Dresses were a common factor at this time. Women usually wore dresses or skirts with blouses. They thought that it was very comfortable and formal look. At home women, would wear shorts with a tucked in blouse or shirt, on warm days. On cooler days,’ women would wear jackets, sweaters or they would wrap a shawl to complete their looks. While most women were working, they wore pants. They usually wore pants with the zipper at the side rather than the middle. This was because it was more fancy and fashionable than a front zipper. Designers were designing both clothing that was tight fitted and clothing that was loose and comfortable. This way women were given more of a variety of clothing to choose from. This was a great thing about the 1950s fashion because it gave women an opportunity to choose clothes that they felt the most comfortable and confident in but was still viewed as okay along the lines of suburban conformity. During World War II while the men were away, women began to gain an independence that was rare before the war. They left their homes to work in offices and factories, earning and managing their own money. Clothing was heavily restricted throughout and just after the war. Everything from the length of skirts to the size of collars was regulated. This resulted in a slim, straight silhouette. Women wore comfortable clothing like suits and shirtdresses, and even began to regularly wear pants, especially to work. The structure of 1940s women’s fashion came to an end in the 1950s. With the men, back from war, women focused on their role as homemakers, and looked for clothing that was easy to wash and keep neat. Acrylic, spandex and polyester were introduced during the decade. Sportswear also came into style and people experimented different looks. Teenagers also developed their own style for the first time. Many variations of skirts, pants, and shorts became popular during the 1950s, paving the way for a wider selection of mix and match outfits. Pencil skirt we adore today came about during the 1950’s and was often paired with a loose blouse. Other skirts of this decade were ankle length with full volume.
