Federal level prisons incarcerate criminals who have violated federal laws and are deemed dangerous. These types of prisons have different security levels for each institution established. In total there are 5 individual levels of security that each prisoner will be categorized in depending on their charge(s). The purpose and main mission of prisons is so that people convicted can rehabilitate, but it mostly is a form of punishment. Inmates are placed in a community-based, controlled environment to better serve the prisoners. Prisons also help society from these dangerous people, causing harm to the community. Considering the amount of people being taken in, there is barely any violence and gang involvement. Just because it is a prison doesn't mean these people being held in prison have to live in solitary confinement. Prisoners have access to the opportunity to play sports, further their religion, feed into their obsession and better their education. The main difference between low and medium security is the fact that the low secured level prisons have their inmates reside in dormitories, unlike how medium security inmates reside in cells. An example of a facility that operates in low security terms is FCI Dublin prison. This specific prison houses inmates who are female only, along with 3 other federal prisons. A little background about this location is how 3 escaped and around 9 inmates were sexually assaulted by the guards. The females in this facility have access to a variety of health services. For instance, they are eligible for pap smears, pelvic and breast examinations and many more. The third level of prison security is Medium, which is a higher level than low security. Much like the programs that are available to the lower class, they are also available to the medium. Since this class of prisoners get to have visitations, they have protocols to follow as they are strip searched. The following prison security levels are high security. High level security prisons have to be considered to have one of the most dangerous incarcerated people that pose a threat to staff. In California, there is a facility that is a federal prison of high security by the name of United States Penitentiary Atwater. It is said that the mission for these institutions that take in all these inmates is to “foster a humane and secure environment and ensure public safety”(“Bop Announces New Mission, Vision and Core Values.” BOP, Accessed 11 May 2024). At this location specifically, there have been reports of 3 inmate deaths. One is suicide and the other 2 are unknown to the public.
