Field Experience Report For my field experience, I volunteered at the afterschool program at Downtown Academy, a private school in downtown Athens. While there, I took the students to aftercare, helped them with their homework, then played with them outside. Each time I went, I was assigned a grade from kindergarten to fifth grade. Over the course of the semester, I was lucky enough to be in each grade at least once. I grew to know many of the students as I continued to go each week. The afterschool program lasts from three to five hours. The first ten minutes consist of silent homework time. Application to Class Concepts Our society today consists of complex dynamics influenced by countless different cultures. Kids learn by mimicking the behavior of those around them, so the classroom in which a student is placed can have major effects on how they view society. Throughout my field experience, I noticed patterns among the students that had been discussed both in class and throughout the book: Is everyone really equal? by Sensoy and DiAngelo on gender roles, privilege, and religion in school. One major theme that stuck out to me was the social construct of gender roles and how children are raised to fit the stereotypes that are associated with their gender. In class we discussed how children are born into a world in which from birth they are told to conform to specific gender roles. Sensoy and DeAngelo explain that “Gender refers to the roles, behaviors, and expectations our culture assigns to those markers: how you are supposed to feel, and act based on whether your body is seen as female or male” (Sensoy and DiAngelo 38).
