How does your Academic Internship/Field Experience relate to your program of study?
My primary emphasis with Family and Consumer Sciences is communications. My internship relates directly to what I would like to do in my future and that is social media marketing. This option allows me to explore many forms on communicating. As a social media intern, I had to use many platforms to communicate to different people. For example, I designed posters and graphics for online content, I sent emails, I wrote blog posts, and I wrote for the social media pages. The classes I took equipped me to communicate on different mediums.

There were times my supervisor was not around so I couldn’t ask her a question, this forced me to critically think about the situation and make a decision for myself. My job was always to promote the Ronald McDonald House; one of the ways I did that was by highlighting stories of volunteers or families, in this I was emphasizing social action and promoted the well-being of sick families through the Ronald McDonald House services. Looking specifically at the communications option, my internship was a little different in that I was not promoting specific family and consumer sciences programs such as nutrition, but what I did do was educate the audiences on the services the Ronald McDonald House provides, how people can get involved, I wrote some newsletters, I proposed different projects and ideas, and I created marketing strategies to promote the House. I created audience appropriate presentation material through social media, design, and powerpoints. While I wasn’t promote specific family and consumer sciences programs, the Ronald McDonald House uses social action to alleviate burdens families of sick children face; the things I did still allowed me to meet many of the outcomes of this
