Old South New South Film Review Slavery in the South can be portrayed in a good way and in a bad way. Just to start off, the term Old South refers to times before the Civil War. The term New South refers to the times after the Civil War. The Civil War was fought between April 12, 1861 and April 9 1865. Some people say that the war was fought over the moral issues of slavery and some people say it was fought over states rights. The three-fifths compromise was signed in 1787 and proposed by James Wilson and Roger Sherman. It simply stated that every African-American person would only be counted as three-fifths of a person. I personally have not seen the film but I am doing my best to try and understand it. From what the historians say, the movie does a great job at showing its viewers what Southerners thought of the South as. They saw themselves as being kind and owning happy slaves. Another point the film makes is about the Confederate flag. One of the people in the film stated that they think the flag should be flown, but in a museum, not all over the place. One of the stories in the film was by Dr. Rubye J. Byrd, who said that she came across a young man who had a Confederate flag and had lights on it. She said there was a group of other African-Americans who were pretty much going to persecute the young man because of this. She then explained to him what a white man sees in the flag and what an African-American sees in the flag. After she explained this to him he took is down. Many people believe that the Confederate flag is a symbol of slavery and oppression, while some people think the flag is a symbol of Southern heritage and Southern pride. The flag is not only a reminder to people of the institution of slavery but it also represents that you still only see an African-American as three-fifths of a person. I think that a lot of people who fly Confederate flags don’t really know what the true meaning of it
