Thank you for sharing your experience of working at the Veteran Affairs (VA) hospital in this week’s discussion post. My father was a veteran and he spent the last part of his life going to the VA hospital for treatments after he was diagnosed with colon cancer. Fortunately, he was able to return home and spend his remaining time with family. My heart goes out to those individuals who do not have anyone to share the end of their life with. Callanan and Kelley’s (2012) book, Final Gifts: Understanding the Special Awareness, Needs, and Communications of the Dying does a wonderful job of describing the value of sharing end of life with loved ones.
