First Continental Congress

The closing of the port of Boston by Britain was the only reason of led all the colonies except for Georgia to send delegates to the First Continental Congress, and have intense debates, to get to a conclusion of alerted the colonial militias to prepare for war and halted all trade with Britain.

Lexington and concord

The first battles that the militia have were at Concord and Lexington. In late june 1776, a large fleet of British Ships approached new york bay . led by the General William howe's, the british force pushed the continental army off of long island, howes 32000 soldiers were were much better equipped than washington 23000 men, most of whom were militia. Howe pounded the continental army, forcing it to retreat farther and farther. The british soldiers captured many patriots as well as value supplies. The british the british pushed washington across the hudson river into new jersey. Howes`s revenge for his defeat at Boston was complete.

Without a victory, washington would lose his army. he decided to take a big chance and go on the offensive.on christmas night ,1776, with a winter storm lashing about them, washington and 2400 soldiers silently rowed across the ice-clogged Delaware river, with short of supplies and many with no shoes through the snow to reach the enemy camp. The Hessians( mercenaries), having celebrated the holiday the night before, where fast asleep. When the patriots sprang upon them. American soldiers took more than 800 soldiers.
