6) When I hear the terms ‘fragments and tears’ I think of holes and incomplete parts. In the way Marina used it on page 15 “I’ve been reading back over this journal, fragments of my life here, tears in the curtains” The ideas that pop into my mind are parts and events that occurred in Marina’s life. Stuff that happened which took an important part of her life with it. Knowing so, she has included and explained bits of her life in the journal.
7) Marina had faced some hardship in her life. It seems like it had ended up getting to her as she sunk down and lost her desire to speak. She forced herself to become mute and to keep it all to herself. Through the information Marina gave us so far, she was pretty good at it. Now that her English teacher Mr. Lindell gave her this journal to write on, she unknowingly uses it to express herself and communicate her knowledge and awareness through. Cathy was obviously in a fragile state as she isn’t normally as angry like that. You could only imagine how Cathy must have felt. ” I was scared and very very sick inside of me but I didn’t run away like I normally do”- page 24-25. People were very cautious and soft with Marina as they knew she was purposefully mute and isolated. She was a lot more delicate and broken unlike any of the others. They pitied her alot. “ You know we’re not meant to yell at her”- page 8. Marina was used to people treating her with pity so when Cathy lashed at her in rage, she didn’t know what to do or how to react since it was completely new to her in the boarding school. Later on, Cathy wrote an apology letter to Marina and I think that broke Marina even more because she felt as if Cathy wrote that out of guilt and pity. And that she didn’t genuinely want to become friends with
