In the autobiography, “Narrative of the life of Fredrick Douglass, An American Slave,” Fredrick Douglass speaks of different trials and tribulations he went through as a child to his current point in time as a man. He witnessed horrible things as a child and experienced heartbreak of the highest tear. He didn’t know his mother very well, he would only see her before bed when she put him to sleep. She worked so hard all day every day, and that was the only time she could have with him. That alone is a tragedy in a child’s life. She had passed away and he hadn’t been told, he didn’t know for a few days that she was gone. He also was forced to watch his young Aunt Hester be beaten by a whip so badly that her body would be dripping in blood. Douglass
