“The United States is like the Titanic and I’m here with the lifeboat trying to get people to leave the ship… I see real financial crisis coming for the United States.” (Peter Sciff) The correlation of this quote was that the Titanic was deemed to be unsinkable but it hit an iceberg and sunk. It is the same thing about the economy, everything was booming with business, people thought it was impossible to crash. But that was not the case in 2008, were thousands of people and businesses lost everything. Boutiques like French Connections were hit hard by the financial crisis; today there are three out of twenty-three stores left in the United States. On August 13th, 2009 on a Thursday afternoon in Santa Monica, California, a photo was captured by Reed Saxon of French Connections store window. This photograph was published online in the newspaper showing examples of stores that suffered during the financial crisis. Viewers look at this photo and see a banner stretching across the storefront window, a mannequin sitting depressed on boxes, and what seems to be an empty store in the background. The picture really emphasizes on what happened during the global financial crisis. It is obvious in the photo that the company wants to get rid of everything as fast as they can. The Global Financial crisis was studied to be the worst economic issue since the 1930s Great Depression. It was a period of time where everyone struggled with economic difficulty. During this time, it was very hard to succeed as a business because consumers reduced their purchases of goods. Saxon captures the depressing emptiness of the closing store. The images angle is front and center focused on a banner that states the stores final reductions. By this angle, the photographer is showing how much hopelessness there was before French connections closed. Other image’s that are focused in are the mannequin and the boxes it is sitting on. Beyond that other items in the photo you can not see so visible. The viewers look beyond in the photo; they will see nothing as it fades into the background which conveys the depressing emptiness of what is left of this hopeless store. The store looks empty which leads to it not being the main focus of this photograph. Saxon wants the main point of this image to be what says on the banner which says “FINAL REDUCTIONS”. Showing that the owners were so hopeless had hopelessness that they needed to advertise what was the last of their sales. As the focus of this image is to drawn the eyes of the viewer’s attention to what is happening in the store. He wants you to be able to predict about what struggles the store has gone through during the time of the global
