Imagine being taken away from your country and thrown into a society where they have different customs. Well for the Garcia girls they faced a situation like this and had a difficult time assimilating into American culture. Life for the Garcia girls was rough even though they had a lavish lifestyle as they struggle to find a new identity in America while holding on to their native roots. Life in the Dominican Republic for the Garcia girls was good for the most part . They had a lavish lifestyle where they lived a large house full of maids and resided next to the tyrannical dictator Trujillo. But the girls couldn't get away from their father patriarchal rules. Even Trujillo misogynist system parallels with Carlos treatment with his daughters. Though some rebel against their parents wishes they are still intimidated by their father authority. They lived in time period where sex and drug was the new “thing.” Some of the girls became a little rebellious and act against their father wishes. In the U.S. their sexuality was explored more and began to assimilate to American customs. It states,” We took turns being the wildest. First one, then another, of us would confess our sins on vacation nights after the parents went to bed, and we had double-checked the halls to make sure there were no “moors on the coast”(Pg 86) This shows how they assimilate into American culture by doing scandalous things with their lives. But when they first settle into America they had a difficult time because this when they first experience racism. It states,” Out of sight of the nuns,the boys pelted Carla with stones aiming them at her feet so there would be no bruises.” go back to where you came from you dirty spic!” Carla has never experienced racism until she came to America and these were the challenges she and her family faced
