In the novel Nightjohn, written by Gary Paulsen, the notion that people should be treated as people regardless of their race, is shown throughout. Sarny, a 12-year-old slave, has seen horrifying things that some do not see in a lifetime. These slaves are treated as if they are machines; however, some of these younger slaves do not understand the concept of freedom and the concept of being treated as a human. Sarny explained that slaves were not allowed to practice their religion because the slave masters did not think that they should be valued as people: “People in the quarters weren’t supposed to pray nor know anything about God” (23).
