The former mayor of New York, Rudy Giuliani, once said, speaking of President Bush, “President Bush’s response in keeping us unified and in turning the ship of state around from being solely on defense against terrorism to being on offense as well and for his holding us together. For that and then his determined effort to defeat global terrorism, no matter what happens in this election. President George W. Bush already has earned a place in our history as a great american president.” (go.galegroup.com) The governor of New York spoke this in a speech he made right after the horrific actions of 9/11. Bush made on America during his presidency that made him famous were things such as the way that he handled the attacks on 9/11. These terrible attacks happened only a few months into the George W. Bush presidency, transforming it in many ways. Bush immediately took action and accused a terrorist network of the attacks and charged the Taliban government with harbouring said terrorists. Bush, soon after assembling an international military coalition, ordered a massive bombing campaign of Afghanistan, beginning on October 7, 2001. In the wake of the 9/11 attacks and during the Afghanistan war Bush’s approval ratings were the highest of his presidency, some polls reaching 90%. He was also very famous for his stand on education. In 2001, he introduced the ‘No Child Left Behind’ act. This act was aimed at improving primary and secondary schools. One of the main focuses was to improve student performance in the classroom. The No Child Left Behind act made significant changes in the curriculum of public primary and secondary schools. This act made it a law that schools were required to administer yearly tests of math and reading skills of public school students. (britannica.com/topic/No-Child-Left-Behind-Act). Another thing that George W. Bush was famous for was the broad tax cuts that he introduced soon after gaining his presidency. In February 2001, Bush proposed a $1.6 trillion tax-cut bill. A compromise measure worth $1.35 billion was passed in June by congress, despite objections that it would benefit the wealthy unfairly.
