Washington appeared at the Second Continental Congress, dressed in uniform, implying he was ready for war. He was appointed Major General and Commander-in-Chief of the colonial army, ready to fight Great Britain. After losing many battles at first, Washington and his troops won their first victory over Britain in March of 1776. In August of the same year, Washington’s troops suffered a tremendous loss. The remainders of his troops were ordered to retreat across the Delaware River into Pennsylvania. On Christmas night of 1776, Washington’s men crossed the Delaware River and attacked unsuspecting British Forces, causing them to lose the battle greatly. During the winter of 1777, Washington’s Troops were barely hanging on. After many diseases and sicknesses struck, they pulled through and manage to win a few victories that spring. In 1782, after the battle of Yorktown, the war was coming to a
