In September 1796, George Washington created the Farewell Address with the help of Hamilton and Madison to warn his successors and the country. This address was meant to guide them so that the U.S. might stand strong and not crumble over generations. Though Washington set good intentions for the young country, his advice was not heeded, which has caused downfall in the United States time and time again. During this time New England was making plans of succeeding at the Hartford convention because they were federalists and they were against the Jeffersonian Republicans that were dominating the government. They felt like they were being mistreated in the Union because the North had no representation in government as all the presidents from that point had been from the South and usually valued the South. Thankfully the New Englanders did not go through with the succession because America would look drastically different today. The reason for the almost succession and sectionalism was largely over political parties. This is another big point Washington warned us of. In conclusion, Washington's farewell address stands as a testament to George's wisdom.
