Lin Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton is a war biopic and romance musical about Alexander Hamilton. There are both academic and popular historical facts in the play. Academic history is about students, scholars, and professors. Popular history is about how the public learns and views history—factual information versus false invention. The play Hamilton shows how the legacy of Alexander Hamilton, especially his writings, relationships, and finances affects popular and academic history by using war, biopic, musical, and love genres. Some important documents that were mentioned are the Declaration of Independence, Common Sense, The Federalist Papers, Raynolds Pampflit, Washingtons Farewell Address, Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. It was written and signed by men like in history, but in the play, the Schuyler sisters ask the men not to forget about women's rights. The song goes, “And when I meet Thomas Jefferson (unh!) I'ma compel him to include women in the sequel work! )” (Miranda) This is different than real life because they didn't talk about giving women rights like voting until 1920. This shows that the play has some similarities but is also different than what happened in real life. In the musical Hamilton, there are many true events that took place that they sang about, but some things about the play were not true. It's true that Alexander Hamilton was born out of wedlock in the Caribbean and both his parents died before he was a teenager. Some things that are not true is that Hamilton punched the bursar. He did not really do that. Another thing that didn't actually happen is that Hamilton was not fired by John Adams in the play. Instead, he reassigned during George Washington’s presidency.
