Lin-Manuel Miranda was born in 1980 to Puerto Rican parents. Miranda’s parents encouraged Miranda and his sister to get involved in music and took them to Broadway musicals when they were able to. Because of the musical influence from his parents, Miranda developed a love for musical theatre and performed in productions while he was in school. He went to school at Hunters College’s elementary and high school. After high school, Miranda attended Wesleyan University and majored in theater. The biography inspired him to write a musical about Alexander Hamilton and he began working on it immediately. Miranda first began with The Hamilton Mixtape, a series of songs written about the life of Alexander Hamilton. The first song Miranda wrote was called “Alexander Hamilton,” which he performed for the first time at the White House Evening of Poetry, Music, and the Spoken Word in May of 2009. Miranda continued to work on Hamilton for the next few years and The Hamilton Mixtape gained fame.
