The first verse in Matthew states, “An account of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of Abraham” (The new oxford annotated Bible, Matt. 1:1) before listing the lineage of Jesus. This verse sets the title of Jesus as the son of man, not the son of God. Through the list of Jesus’ human ancestors, the author of Matthew is showing that Jesus was of human origin, but did come from the line of David. This is important because David was a part of the united monarchy, the appointed king by God himself. The author adds this in the beginning to give meaning behind the term “son of man” than Jesus gives to himself (Matt 9:6), because if Jesus was from the line of David then he remains special and set apart form the rest. The Jesus in Matthew appears to be a bit more controlled and compassionate, even loving towards many crowds who follow him. Mark’s Jesus was more distant and cold, losing his temper much easier than Matthew’s Jesus. In Matthew 10:6 Jesus refers to the unbelievers as sheep, implying that he is the good shepherd taking care of his innocent and unknowing flock. He also states that he will give rest to the weary (Matt. 11:28) and that he is a leader who is gentle and has a humble heart (Matt. 11:29). In the book of Mark Jesus was not so openly kind and spoke often of the suffering that his followers would have to endure.
