“What is Plagiarism” is an article written by Peter Moore to enlighten individuals about plagiarism. “What is Plagiarism” is a very brief article; however, the article is informative. In the article, one will learn about the three grades of plagiarism, which are: Grade A, Grade B, and Grade C. The article suggest Grade A is considered the worst form of plagiarism. According to Moore, “Grade A plagiarism occurs where an individual makes a premediated and systematic attempt to pass of the work of one or more others as his own, the plagiarizer taking care to disguise the fact by suppressing all revealing references, by changing words here and there in order to deflect suspicion, and so on.” While in college, a colleague plagiarized my paper, but the professor could notice the similarity of the two papers. The colleague was not punished severely due to his position on the football team. Grade B plagiarism “occurs where an individual in the course of writing an essay or dissertation knowingly refrains from making clear, through the erratic or inconsistent use of recognized conventions, the normal distinctions between such element as paraphrase, quotation, reference and commentary.” Personally, I do not understand Grade B plagiarism. Grade C plagiarism happens unintentionally or accidentally. When Grade C plagiarism occurs, the writer tends to be lazy and unorganized. I doubt individuals know the different grades of plagiarism. As a graduate student, I did not know different forms of plagiarism existed. I would encourage individuals read “What is Plagiarism” before starting high school. With this effort, the act of plagiarism could be eliminated before high school students enter college.
