Gray bats have dark gray fur on their backs that change to a brown color after the molting season. Annual molting occurs between early June and early August, where gray bats eat relatively larger amounts of hair during grooming. They weigh between 7 and 16 grams and can live up to 17 years, though only about half of the population survive to maturity.
Critical Habitat Gray bats live in limestone karst areas in western Georgia. They are cave dependent, meaning that they can only survive in caves, and not cave like structure as other species of bats are known to do. Gray bats inhabit less than 5 percent of caves, so any disturbance to their habitats can be extremely detrimental to their population. Gray bats migrate about 300 miles
