The great barrier reef is one of the seven wonders of the natural world, it is the world's largest coral reef system and the biggest living structure on the planet. The Great Barrier Reef is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland and is 344, 400 square kilometers. It is composed of over 3000 individual reefs and 900 islands. There are many different marine animals and coral reefs that live in the Great Barrier Reef some of these include: thirty species of whales and dolphins, six species of sea turtles, 215 species of birds, seventeen species of sea snakes, more than 1500 species of fish and 330 species of ascidians on the reef system.

The Great Barrier Reef is being threatened in many different ways and because of all these threats flora and fauna are dying. Climate change is one of the major threat to the Great Barrier Reef as it leads to coral bleaching, sea levels rising, increased sea temperature and it means we are more likely to have severe weather events. To stop poor water quality WFF are trying to make it a law for farming pollution into the reef to stop as farming pollution is one of the main causes of poor water quality. They are also planning a multi-million dollar fund to repair reef catchments and to assist farms to come up with a better disposal system. WWF believes that by doing this it will enable coral gardens to recover from coral bleaching. Another thing WWF want to do is develop a new vision for the reefs fishery to stop overfishing. To do this they have partnered with local environmental groups, recreational fishing clubs, commercial fishing associations, tackle shops and scientists. Together all these groups will develop a new way that the reefs resources can best be managed and they will all continue to champion for world’s best practice
