The Great Barrier Reef is one of Australia's most visited tourist spot. It is the natural wonder that the country and its people are most proud of and it also features in the Top 7 Natural Wonders of the World. It is said to be the largest coral reef in the world. In fact, it is so big that it exceeds the Great Wall of China in length! Abundant marine life consisting of about three thousand reef systems, coral cays and literally thousands of islands make the Great Barrier Reef the ideal spot for a fun-filled vacation!

What most people find difficult while visiting the expansive barrier reef is where to go and which places to stay in. Since most of us have little time on our hands, it is best to plan out the vacation to the Barrier reef before going. However, there are so many hotels, so many islands and just so many things to do! Some islands like the Wilson Island believe in retaining the pristine nature of the Reef and connectivity to it is really tough. However, on the plus side, these islands give you the true, what many call; the "Survivor" experience and you can a hand's on experience of the rustic, coastal life. Other islands like Greenis Island are more commercial and are dotted with beautiful resorts, cruise tours and other arrangements of the sort.

Incase you are planning to visit quite a few islands then be clear of one thing, the Barrier Reef is not one continuous piece of landmass. Most tourism guides and pictures will give you such and idea but the reef is actually a collection of coral islands which are at times pretty far away from each other.
