Gregor Johann Mendel the “father of modern genetics” was born on July 22, 1822. Gregor Johann Mendel was born in Heinzendorf, Austria in his family’s farm to Anton and Rosine Mandel. He grew up more on the country side setting rather than the city setting. When he was eleven a local schoolmaster became very impressed with his work and his attitude for learning. The schoolmaster recommended Gregor to be sent to a secondary school in Troppau for his continuation in education. The move was very difficult for the family and a difficult experience for Gregor. Gregor eventually got used to the school and excelled in all his classes. In 1840, Gregor Mandel graduated from the school with honors. After graduation Gregor enrolled in a two-year program at the Philosophical Institute of the University of Olmütz. At the University, Gregor excelled in all his classes, especially physics and math. He joined the Augustinian order at the Saint Thomas Monastery in Brno. The monastery was the center of religion and Gregor wanted to study and research the members. He would later gain access to the monastery’s excessive library. In 1851, Mendel was sent to the University of Vienna to continue his studies in science. Mendel studied mathematics and physics during his time at the University Mendel studied botany under Franz Unger. Franz Unger began using microscopes in his studies and he was part of the evolution
