The date was Wednesday, August 22, 1984. It was an extremely hot day in downtown Dallas, Texas which was the host site of the 1984 Republican National Convention. Inside the Dallas Convention Center thousands of Americans were ecstatic about the news of President Ronald W. Reagan and Vice President George H. W. Bush winning the Republican party over for the chance of a second term in the White House. What no American knew was that not only what was happening inside the convention center that day was going to change the United States, but what was occurring outside the center would too. While the Republican Convention was occurring that night Gregory Lee “Joey” Johnson a member of the Revolutionary Communist Youth Brigade along with many other members of the Brigade, were protesting in the streets outside of the Convention Center that night. This time Johnson and his fellow demonstrators were protesting the new Flag Protection Act. On the steps of the United States Capitol building in Washington D.C. Johnson and three other men set fire to three American Flags while chanting “burn, baby, burn”. Johnson and the three other men spent the following night in jail for breaking the new Flag Protection law. The United States Attorney’s Office declined all charges against Gregory Johnson that night claiming “there was insufficient evidence to prosecute him”. Johnson later used the United States Attorney’s Office’s decision not to charge him against them by making the claim that they were afraid to take him to court again. He called the government's decision an “act of cowardice” and stated that the people of America should be outraged that their own country is scared to go to court against a single civilian which avoided a United States v.
