To effectively collect data on the effect of socioeconomic status on perception on culture, I propose a grounded theory because it provides a strong and effective framework to learn about a subject’s perceptions and feelings regarding a topic of study (Strauss & Corbin, 1998). The grounded method supports creating a new theory consisting of interrelated concepts rather than testing existing theories (Gorra, 2015). Additionally, it applies a form of purposive sampling also known as theoretical sampling, where the subjects for the research study are selected based on specific criteria set by the researcher as well as the information gathered on initial findings (Gorra, 2015). The recordings and all other data collected from the study will be transcribed and decoded at the end of the stud. When the process of transcription and decoding is complete, the data will then be sorted and categorized by type (i.e. notes and recordings). The coding process involves identifying persistent and repeated words, phrases, themes as well as concepts within a participant’s responses so that underlying patterns can be identified and analyzed using Qualitative Solutions and Research (QSR) NUD*IST software for Qualitative Analysis (Gorra, 2015). This research project will be approved by the Missouri State University Institutional Review Board (IRB) prior to the execution of the study.
Potential participants will be recruited from the southwest region of Missouri. To ensure that there is sufficient sample size, 5 to 7 subjects will be interviewed from each county with the hope of obtaining around 60 to 80 subjects total combined. A most recent data from the United States Census Bureau show that about 2% of people who live in Missouri are Asians (United States Census Bureau , 2015). Basic biographical information about each subject will serve as baseline data and will be collected at the time of the interview (Appendix C) for descriptive information such as the mean, median, …show more content…
Subjects will be interviewed using a standard script for a period of no more than 30 minutes. Data collected will be analyzed through coding, a technique under a ground theory approach. The grounded theory strongly encourages the application of coding techniques to examine interviewee’s accounts at different levels (Gorra, 2015). Specific codes will be assigned to the subject’s words and phrases to develop concepts. Additionally, effective data analysis under the grounded theory approach relies on coding, which is a “process of breaking the collected data down into smaller components, labeling those components and comparing them. Comparing data with data, case with case, event with event, code with code, to understand and explain variation in the data (Sbaraini, Carter, Evans, & Blinkhorn, 2011).” Another importance of coding when conducting an interview is that it provides the researcher the opportunity to detect issues that subject considers very important.
