How does growth during middle childhood compare with growth earlier or later?
Middle childhood is often the best of times. The period between 6 to 11 years of age is generally a time of good health and a window of accelerated growth both physically and mentally where children master new skills. It is also before the perils of adolescence such as eating disorders, stress related peer pressure and personal insecurities. Of course this can be a negative time as well in adverse circumstances. Children being bullied, various illness, single parenting and other type issues can also play a negative role in this critical time of growth and development.
Middle childhood is generally considered a safe period of life with a much lower death rate. It is also a time for parents and teachers to instill healthy habits into a child's behavior and also set in place an example the child. Typically beginning to emerge only at the age of 4 and by some predictions tripling by the age of 6, considered to be the start of early childhood. Not to underscore in the importance of early childhood development as there are key important factors as well. Even the very limited language skills of early childhood are directly related to middle childhood vocabulary expansion. Emotional regulation during early childhood is also in a critical early stage that will affect the individual for the rest of their lives. Proper nutrition during this time period is also vital in brain development for the future. Early introduction into education in a key part for later expansion.
