Growth mindset is the willingness to attempt a task repeatedly until success, even after failure. To a person with a growth mindset, “failure” is a natural byproduct of the process of success. On the other hand, those with fixed mindsets view success and failure as binary results. A person with a fixed mindset will fail because they give up at the first sign of struggle. There is a concrete link between one’s willingness to repeat a task and their probability of succeeding at the said task. Students who believe that intelligence is a fluid attribute that can be improved have been shown to earn higher grades than their fixed mindset peers (Dweck et al. 2007). Even the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan, was cut from his high school varsity team. Despite enduring a setback that would have been career-ending for those with a fixed mindset, Jordan persevered and continued to accumulate both basketball knowledge and experience. He proceeded to earn a full scholarship to North Carolina and win 6 NBA championships. Jordan had the mindset needed to keep trying until eventual success. As Jordan himself said, "I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can't accept not trying.” Jordan would rather fail continuously than ever be thought of as someone who is too scared or lazy to try. Jordan is the epitome of growth mindset.
