It goes without saying that the United States Army’s Human Resources Sergeant is one of the most overworked and sometimes underappreciated professions in the Army. Nevertheless the Human Resources (HR) profession is a great field for organized, driven individuals who are interested in helping the Army reach their goals while helping Soldiers reach their potential. Ironically we still ponder over the question, what it means to be a Profession. First Sergeants and Sergeants Majors shape and maintain the stability of the Army while supervising rigors of training providing experienced guidance to the profession. Other topics that will be discussed are the Army Professional Culture and the HR Sergeant’s Role in the Profession of Arms.
1. What is means to be a Profession.
In a lot of ways, the HR section of any unit serves as the conscience. This means that the HR Sergeant needs to have a keen sense of ethics when it comes to confidential information and following Army regulations and policies. This profession trains and develops Soldiers taking them from apprenticeship (Private) to expert (Master Sergeant). Every unit in the United States has a direct or indirect HR person or section they can rely on to get up to date information and administration actions accomplished.

This can mean anything from quickly finding answers to Soldiers dynamic and intricate issues to putting together a Hail and Farewell event for an incoming and outgoing Soldiers. The best HR Sergeant can balance being a friendly presence in the office with taking control to help things run smoothly. Regardless of the task, the HR professional is able to accomplish every mission within the field and balance everything within that
