A Brief History of Halloween and the Origins of the Rituals That Define It Rituals are a necessary element to culture and society. Rituals connect us as a community, help mark passages of time and evoke memories while sharing history. Rituals can be personal, or recognized by a family, such as going to an Opening game for their favorite sports team every year. Other rituals are recognized by large populations throughout countries, or the world. In the United States, we recently marked the ritual of Halloween. Currently, this holiday ritual consists of carving pumpkins in to Jack-O-Lanterns, dressing up in costumes, and trick-or-treating. Where did these traditions come from? How have they changed throughout the years? I will explore the origins of these rituals and how they evolved in to their current form.

Early Gaelic societies marked the passage of time through four periods of the year: Oimelc on February 1, Beltane on May 1, Lughnassadh on August 1, and Samhain on November 1 (Festivals, N.D.) Samhain falls between the autumn equinox and winter solstice, marking the period of time when crops and animals where brought in from the fields, prior to the cold and death associated with winter.
