During this scene, Hamlet treats his mother Gertrude very harshly and gets physical with her, after this Hamlet believes he heard Claudius spying on them so without looking he thrusts his sword in the tapestry and kills Polonius. With Gertrude all upset about the death of Polonius, Hamlet starts shaming her for marrying Claudius. After verbally assaulting his mother Gertrude, King Hamlet's ghost appears to Hamlet. This scene is slightly altered in the movie because, during Hamlet and Gertrude's argument, Hamlet is seen on top of his mother in her bed having a little makeout session; this is when the ghost of Hamlet's father appears. As you may be thinking “how can someone die two times?”. Well, that is the question that will only be answered by the dysfunctionality of Denmark. The end of the play starts out with a fearful battle between Hamlet and Laertes. Claudius and Laertes put poison on the end of Laertes sword so that once he thrusts Hamlet, he will die regardless of the outcome of the match. Claudius also prepared a cup of poisoned wine for Hamlet, which is promptly consumed by Gertrude; this is when the queen of Denmark dies. Laertes then blames King Claudius for the death of the queen, which results in Hamlets long awaited revenge on Claudius. Laertes then dies from his owned poisoned sword. Hamlet, who was gashed by Laertes sword suffers a slow painful death. In the play Hamlet, this is when Hamlet introduces Young Fortinbras as the new king of Denmark. I think he gives the throne to Young Fortinbras because Hamlet believes that he is the prince that Hamlet has envisioned himself being. In the movie, the annexation of Young Fortinbras leaves Denmark without a king. So this leaves the state of Denmark in disarray.
Hamlet is a brilliant play that is very difficult to understand in today's day and age. This is why much of the play is left open for interpretation. Movie producers try to re-enact Shakespearean plays to help give us a better understanding of the plays.
