1.0 This research will investigate the current state of knowledge regarding the connection between religious beliefs and racially motivated hate crimes, through the analysis of various academic writings. The key areas identified throughout this literary analysis will include white-supremacy, anti-Semitism, religious groups, and hate crime. Whilst anti-Semitism may not be viewed as racism, as Jewish people are not a ‘race’, it often comes together with white supremacy. The reason for this is widely disputed. The investigation will recognise a variety of white supremacist hate groups and their associations with various religions. The main religions studied will be the denominations of Catholicism and Christianity, and Old Norse religions, including Asatru and Odinism.
1.1 This research aims to examine a selection of writings which discuss the links between religion and racially motivated hate crime, and to analyse a variety of hate groups around the world to determine their connections to religious teachings. By examining a selection of writings on the topic, it is possible to analyse existing theories and debates around the subject, and determine the contribution made by those concepts. It also provides a means of determining whether religious teachings have any direct influence on the actions of racist religious groups, or whether those groups use a religious background to justify their prejudices. This analysis is important due to the many well-known hate groups around the world, and their possible links to religions.
