“I didn't mean for anyone to die.” Death is a pretty rough subject to encounter. Unfortunately, the sad reality is that the unlucky majority of us at one point in our lives have had an encounter with the subject of death, and as many of us know it can impact our lives in the harshest of ways. Now imagine for a second that the death of many could have been averted if you had not allowed yourself to be fueled by hate. That's exactly what Valerie Leftman ponders after her boyfriend Nick becomes the perpetrator of a gory and horrifying shooting. A shooting that ends the lives of many of their fellow classmates. The victims were determined by the hate list, the list which Nick and Valerie had imbued with hatred for the people that would soon have their lives taken in a burst of insanity. Naturally we try to cope with it but sometimes we cope using negativity and it doesn't help the situation. A moment where this is shown in the book is when Valerie explains how she created the hate list. Valerie writes: “And that's how it started : the infamous Hate List. Started as a joke. A way to vent frustration. But it grew into something else I’d never have guessed”(134). Although Valerie was using the hate list as a method to deal with her struggles; the hate that she used to handle them did not help.
