Queen Hatshepsut of the New Kingdom was the fifth Pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty of Egypt, reigning from 1479 BC through until 1458 BC. She initially acted as regent to her stepson, Thutmose III, but then assumed the role of Pharaoh, co-ruling alongside Thutmose III. To assert her authority, she adopted typically masculine roles, titles and regalia. Her reign was one of relative peace, prosperity and wealth. During this time she oversaw numerous remarkable, large-scale building projects and military conquests, with Egypt establishing itself as a world power, expanding the empire through diplomacy and force. An increase in wealth and trade was observed, and art flourished.

Royal texts often claimed that Hatshepsut was destined for kingship since birth and that her father and the gods had chosen her to rule, authenticating Hatshepsut's rule to the people. The Oracle of Amun declared that it was the will of Amun for Hashepsut to be Pharaoh. In the inscription, Amun states “Thou art the king, taking possession of the Two Lands.I have long intended them for thee.” He clearly states that she is king and this has been divinely preordained, solidifying her reign.

This is corroborated by an inscription in which Hatshepsut declares that “I acted under his command; it was he who led me”, referring to Amun guiding her reign, as well as another inscription in Karnak stating that her father appointed her as Pharaoh before his death, allegedly stating “This daughter of mine, Khnumetamun Hatshepsut, may she live, I have appointed as my successor upon my throne.” Royal subjects heard this proclamation, accepting her rule as
